The Little Things

Wednesday, 02. April 2008 by Tungsten

Today, for the first time since I started working here, I experienced hot (or at least warm) water in the restroom. I was so overwhelmed with joy and delight that washed my hands for a good or three times longer than I normally would have given the usual icy nature of the water in our building. Now it isn’t like I don’t have hot water at home and this was some sort of exotic luxury that I may never experience again in my life but I do have to wonder if I will experience it again at my office any time soon. Who knows it could be gone tomorrow or even ten minutes from now. Really makes me appreciate the little things.

Little things have been on my mind a lot lately given that I am in the process of moving into a new apartment that lacks some of the little things like drawers in the kitchen (don’t ask it is just kind of a poor design that I really won’t get into in great detail – no offense to my landlord if he ever reads this). Now I am left wondering, will I get by without some of the little things I am used to and just be happy when I have them again in the future, or is not having just a few small things going to drive me up the wall enough to make me miserable and pull the ejection seat on this apartment the first chance I get? I’m hoping the former option proves more true than the latter because, despite the fact that I really do spend a lot of time in the kitchen, I would have to be a pretty whiny privileged bastard to let a slightly sub-standard kitchen ruin my year when a lot of people out there have much bigger things to worry about like whether they will be able to eat, which far outweighs having a place to put flatware.

Still, if I can get him to upgrade the kitchen in six months to a year just so it has more storage (which should be easy given the layout) then I will probably be more inclined to stay put.
